Deepawali commonly known as Diwali is the one of the pious and major festival of Hindus. As the word Deepawali is the combination of two Hindi Words Deep and Awali and the word together means 'Row of Lamps.' This Hindu festival is the festival of lights which is celebrated across the nation with great pomp and show. Along with lighting up earthen lamp (diya), lights and candles around homes, streets and surrounding premises, people worship on this day too.

Why is Diwali Celebrated?

There are several reasons behind celebrating Diwali. According to Hindu community, this festival of lights is celebrated to lighten up the dark night of Amavasya as there is complete darkness all around as no moon or moonlight is found. In general, by lighting up diyas or candles in homes, and surroundings, people show the victory of pure light over darkness that reflects evil powers.

As we all know that the Goddess of wealth 'Maa Laxmi' is worshipped on this day but do you know why? The reason is, since ages, the Hindu devotees believe that Maa Lakshmi comes to earth on the auspicious day of Diwali to bestow wealth, good health and prosperity upon their devotees. The intention behind lighting up diyas or small oil lamps is supposed to help the Goddess of Wealth & Fortune, Maa Lakshmi to enter their homes to bless them with wealth, good fortune, prosperity and happiness.

Another Hindu mythological belief is that when Lord Rama returned to his birthplace Ayodhya with his younger brother Lakshamana and wife Sita after completing 14 years of exile and defeating one of the most powerful demon Raavana to took back his wife, the common people of Ayodhya had lighten up the whole Ayodhya with Diyas to welcome their own King. Since then, the festival of Diwali has been celebrated every year.

When is Diwali 2024?  

According to the Hindu Calendar called Panchang, this festival is celebrated on the day of Amavasya (dark nights or no moon night) or Karthik Month each year. This year Diwali is going to be celebrated on October 31-November 01, 2024. However, the date of Diwali varies every year as we generally follow the Western Calendar month system.   

How is Diwali celebrated currently?

These days, the festival of lights witnesses many changes in terms of its way of celebration. Currently, people not only use diyas and candles to light up their homes and surrounding premises, but they also use different kinds of LED lights to add new spark to their festival. Burning crackers is also an indispensable part of this festival. There are multiple types of crackers that people use to burn to enhance their celebration.

Apart from that if we look at the larger picture, this festival of lights is one of the most crucial time of a year when most of family members who work in different town or state return their home to celebrate this festival. Family members, relatives, friends and neighbors come together and celebrate it by offering each other sweets, and other gifts. Most people enjoy eating Puri, Paneer Sabji, Gulab-Jamun and few other sweet & chat items of this day to make their festival even more special and memorable. In short, you can say that it is a festival of togetherness.
